Israel Tennis Center - Akko

Description:

Israel Tennis Centers Akko Location

Dating back thousands of years, the city of Akko is considered one of the oldest continually inhabited sites in the world. During the Second Lebanon War, tens of thousands of Israeli residents found themselves under the constant threat of daily rocket fire. As a result, the Israel Tennis Centers, partnering with the local community, recognized the need to create a safe haven for the children of Akko. As one of the most diverse cities in Israel, with a large percentage of Jews, Muslims, and Christians calling the city home, the ITC center at Akko considers their coexistence program one of the shining jewels amongst its many social outreach programs.

At our center in Akko children of different ethnicities and religious backgrounds play and work together in a loving and accepting environment. With 25 percent of the city’s residents of Muslim origin, our Coexistence program plays a crucial role in creating a brighter future for the children of Akko by teaching tolerance and understanding. Whether they are native born Israelis, Muslims, or Ethiopian and Russian born Jews, our doors are open to every child who can benefit from the formative programs offered by the ITC.

In the short time since its inception, the ITC – Akko has been able to expand its reach to the local community by offering the following:

  • 13 tennis courts, a 500 seat mini stadium, lecture hall, fitness facility and 1 large and 2 small bomb shelters
  • Coexistence programs that promote mutual respect among children of varied backgrounds and religions

Harry & Evelyn Burg Israel Tennis Center - Arad

Description:

itc-arad-location-enterance
Located on the outskirts of the Judean desert, the city of Arad, built in 1960, offers something for everyone. Known throughout Israel for its clean air and hypnotic desert landscape, thousands of visitors pass through Arad every year on their way to campsites or a dip in the Dead Sea. Nearby, travelers will also find the ancient biblical city of Tel Arad whose origins date back over 4,000 years. Modern day Arad is home to a diverse population of 23,400, including Ashkenazi and Sephardi Jews, Bedouins, and new immigrants. However, the city is in a state of decline with a steady stream of residents slowly leaving due to the poor economic conditions plaguing the area. Arad’s unemployment rate is near 25 percent.

As a result, the ITC in Arad serves as a beacon of hope for the many children that walk through its doors every day. The various social impact programs cater to children-at-risk, who arrive at the Center in the afternoons and receive a warm meal and help with their schoolwork. At Arad teaching the game of tennis comes secondary to teaching life skills such as respect, cooperation and determination.

The programs and services include the following:

  • 7 courts, two hitting walls, two shelters and an all-purpose building housing a recreational room, fitness/game room and ping pong tables
  • Comprehensive children at risk program
  • Ethiopian empowerment program in collaboration with the Ministry of Absorption and Youth Futures
  • Tennis programs for children and adults, from beginners to advanced players

Samson Israel Tennis Center - Beer Sheva

Description:

itc-beer-sheva

The first Prime Minister of Israel, David Ben Gurion, declared that the population and development of the Negev is imperative to the future of the entire nation of Israel. Many years later, Beer Sheva has become the Negev’s largest and most influential metropolis, currently the fifth largest city in Israel. In the past two decades the city’s tremendous growth can be attributed in large part to the multiple waves of immigrants from Ethiopia and the former Soviet Union who have made Beer Sheva their home. Welcomed with open arms, Beer Sheva is now home to 6,000 Ethiopian Jews. As this population continues to grow, the ITC’s goal is to successfully integrate the children of these refugees into Israeli society and ensure that they become successful and productive Israeli citizens.

To accommodate this growing community, the ITC launched its Excellence Program for Ethiopian children which aims to help Ethiopian youth gain confidence and transcend social barriers by instilling a sense of identity and belonging. In addition, the Israel Tennis Center – Beer Sheva is home to many prestigious tennis tournaments, including the annual Alex Podolsky International Tennis Tournament, in which 100 of the world’s top youth gather to compete.

The Samson ITC – Beer Sheva has multiple programs committed to helping immigrant, at risk and special needs children. It offers these children:

  • 8 tennis courts, 1 large and 2 small bomb shelters as well as other indoor and outdoor services to help thousands of children each year
  • Host many tennis tournaments on a local, national, and international level
  • Embrace Program for at risk youth
  • Excellence Program for children from Ethiopia
  • Bedouin Coexistence program
  • Programs for children with developmental disabilities, including hearing impaired
  • Special Olympics training programs

Nussdorf - Mark Families Israel Tennis Center - Jaffa

Description:

ITC Jaffa Location Entrance

The years have only added to the charm of ancient Jaffa. The port-city’s mixture of old and new, antique and modern is one of a kind. The beautiful Clock Tower greets all visitors coming from the Tel-Aviv Boardwalk, while the Old City of Jaffa, with its narrow alleys and small art galleries, is nearby. It was at Jaffa where thousands of Jewish immigrants first arrived in Israel from Europe.

Unfortunately today much of Jaffa is plagued by high rates of crime and poverty, underscoring the importance that the ITC – Jaffa plays within the local community. The dedicated staff strives to help the varied communities of new immigrants, mainly from the former Soviet Union and Ethiopia, as well as Arabs and children with disabilities who all take part in programs conducted at the Tennis Center. Reflecting the diversity of the community, the Tennis Center operates programs for youth at risk and coexistence projects for Arab and Jewish children.

As one of the centers involved in our High Performance program, some of Israel’s top players have honed their skills on these courts including Amir Weintraub and Amir Hadad.

The Nussdorf-Mark Families Israel Tennis Centers offers a variety of programs, including:

Ben B. & Joyce E. Eisenberg Israel Tennis Center - Jerusalem

Description:

Eisenberg ITC Jerusalem Location

Located atop the Judean Mountains and in close proximity to the Dead Sea, Jerusalem offers visitors an experience like no other. Jerusalem is holy to Jews, Christians and Muslims worldwide whose shrines can be seen when visiting the Old City. They include the sacred Temple Mount, Western Wall, Church of the Holy Sepulcher, Dome of the Rock and Al-Aqsa Mosque. Jerusalem is home to many cultural institutions as well, most notably the Israel Museum and the Yad Vashem Holocaust Memorial Museum. However, beyond the beauty and historical significance of the city, the stark reality is that more than half of Jerusalem’s children live below the poverty line.

At the Ben B. and Joyce E. Eisenberg Israel Tennis Center in Jerusalem, the focus is on diversity and equality. With over one-third of the city’s residents identifying themselves as non-Jewish, Jerusalem is Israel’s most multicultural city, and the programs at our center are a direct reflection of the city’s rich diversity. Celebrating and extolling the cultural and religious differences of the city’s inhabitants, the center operates programs for children at risk, developmentally challenged and Ethiopian immigrants from local absorption centers. It is also an integral part of the ITC’s Doubles Coexistence Program, a national effort to bring Arab and Jewish children together through the medium of sport and non-formal education. The center also operates the Twinned Kindergarten Peace program that brings together classes of Arab and Jewish children aged 4 to 6 years and their teachers to participate in weekly motor skill development games and activities.

As one of the centers involved in our High Performance program, some of Israel’s top players have honed their skills on these courts including 2008 Australian Open Champion Andy Ram.

Other programs and services include:

  • 18 illuminated courts, a 2,000-seat stadium, practice wall, fitness room, showers and restrooms, air conditioned lectures room, snack bar, sport shop and 1 large bomb shelter and 3 small shelters
  • Orthodox Children at Risk Tennis and Fitness programs
  • Ethiopian Empowerment program
  • Children and adults in our Developmental Disabilities program, including hearing impaired
  • Tennis programs for children and adults, from beginners to advanced players

Israel Tennis Center - Kiryat Shmona

Description:

KiryatShmona Entrance2

Located on the Lebanese border, the city of Kiryat Shmona was founded in 1949 by Jewish settlers from Morocco. Throughout the 1950’s and 1960’s, many Olim from Asia and Northern Africa helped turn Kiryat Shmona into Northern Galilee’s central hub for industry, commerce and health services. The city is just a short drive from lush green forests and magnificent mountain ridges.

Unfortunately, remnants of the Second Lebanon War are evident amongst the beauty of the Kiryat Shmona area. It is one of the youngest cities in Israel, with 33 percent of the population below the age of twenty. Living under the constant threat of rockets, the ITC center serves as a safe haven and place of respite for many of the children living in and around Kiryat Shmona. ITC Manager Shaul Zohar, recalls from his own childhood the tension and pressures that resulted from not knowing when the next bomb would fall. The center does its best to help the children of Kiryat Shmona cope by providing ways to vent their energies and anxieties through sport while enriching their physical and emotional well-being.

As one of the centers involved in our High Performance program, some of Israel’s top players have honed their skills on these courts. They include Dudi Sela and his brother Ofer.

The ITC – Kiryat Shmona offers a variety of essential services and programs, including:

  • 8 illuminated courts, three of them all-weather indoor courts, large practice wall, fitness room, showers and restrooms, television room, 1 large and 2 small bomb shelters and a racquet stringing service station
  • Embrace program for Youth at Risk
  • Ethiopian Empowerment program for those children who have emigrated from Ethiopia
  • Special Olympics program for special needs children, including hearing impaired
  • Sport Psychology Program to help with communication, focus and concentration, problem solving and issues related to stress, pressure and anger

Israel Tennis Center - Ofakim

Description:

Ofakim Entrance3

The city of Ofakim was founded in 1955 by Jewish immigrants from North Africa, Iran, India and Romania. Located in Southern Israel, it is a short 15 minute drive from neighboring Beer Sheva. As an organization committed to empowering children through the medium of sport, the focus of the ITC in Ofakim is introducing important programs that teach life skills and values to children who would not ordinarily be exposed to them. Being one of Israel’s most impoverished cities, the children of Ofakim often come from poor and disadvantaged backgrounds. A city which is stagnating, where some estimates put the unemployment rate at close to 25%, there is little hope to be found among the citizens of Ofakim. With less than ten percent of the city’s youth going on to gain degrees in higher education, the center at Ofakim offers its children after school counseling and tutoring to improve their academic performance and provide them with the skills to excel, ensuring that they grow up to become winners on and off the court. The center offers a variety of services and programs catered to meet the needs of the Ofakim community. These include:

  • 6 illuminated courts, a covered practice wall, study room and 2 small bomb shelters
  • Special tennis programs for developmentally challenged children and adults
  • Empowerment and Integration programs for at risk children

Israel Tennis Center - Tel Aviv

Description:

IMG_1660

Fondly nicknamed the city that never sleeps, Tel Aviv is an evolving history lesson. It features old sections such the first Tel Aviv neighborhood of Neve Tzedek, Bauhaus buildings from the mid-20th century and a wide array of boulevards and town squares. Tel Aviv is also Israel’s center of commerce, culture and entertainment. Located on the Mediterranean seashore, it offers visitors trendy nightclubs, cutting-edge theatre, first-rate museums and a bustling atmosphere that infuses the city’s rich history with modern cultural events.

However, like every large city, some of Tel Aviv’s neighborhoods score low on Israel’s socio-economic scale. Beneath the glitz and glamor of the “white city” lies a serious poverty issue. According to the Jerusalem Institute for Israel studies, 23 percent of Tel Aviv’s children live below the poverty line.  It is in these impoverished areas where the work of the ITC center in Tel Aviv is most important. Keeping children at risk off the streets and in a productive and nurturing environment has been its mission since the center’s inception, and the large numbers of alumni crediting the ITC with changing their lives is a testament to the success of the center.

As one of the centers involved in our High Performance program, some of Israel’s top players have honed their skills on these courts. They include the most successful Israeli female athlete of all time Shahar Pe’er.

The programs and services include:

  • 14 illuminated courts, a practice wall, a state-of-the-art fitness room and 2 small bomb shelters
  • Children at Risk program

Elizabeth & Lawrence Krulik Family Israel Tennis Center – Tiberias

Description:

ITC Tiberias Location

The historic city of Tiberias is located in Northern Israel bordering the Sea of Galilee (the “Kinneret”). Considered to be one of Judaism’s holiest cities, Tiberias offers many attractions, including an ancient sector that is home to the tombs of prominent Jewish figures such as Maimonides. The city is also renowned for its legendary hot springs that have attracted travelers seeking relief from various ailments for thousands of years.

ITC Manager Tal Amsalem understands the important role that the center plays in the lives of the area’s youth. “Our goals are to reach out to as many children from the area as we can, nurturing a new generation of tennis talents while teaching life skills though our social impact programs for the developmentally challenged as well as our Arab-Jewish coexistence program.”

In recent years, the center has become a flagship for Arab-Jewish coexistence. With over 12,000 youth under the age of 18 living in Tiberias, the ITC plays an integral role in stabilizing and improving the local community. Through its Doubles Coexistence Program the children of Tiberias and the neighboring Arab village of Ilabon play tennis together.
